Seeing pictures all around: celebrating photography every day!

Ever since I found my way back to analogue photography, you could say that I have been celebrating photography every day. That does not necessarily mean that I take photos everyday, thought believe me, I would like to. My interest in photography has changed the way I see my surroundings. I see pictures all around. I am more attentive to light and shadow, to colours and shapes, and faces that seem to tell stories. Sometimes I may feel a little disappointed if I see something beautiful and I didn’t bring my camera to capture it. But soon I will accept the loss and instead, fully enjoy the fact that here I am, seeing a photographic moment. I often remember these moments vividly afterwards. I am even more aware of what it is that appealed to me; what it is that made me want to take a photo in the first place. This way of seeing life through the eyes of an ever curious photographer, contributes much meaning and joy to my daily life.

I attribute this new way of seeing to all that I have learned from my engagement in photography. And I do bring one of my cameras with me whenever I can. Each one of them teaches me something valuable. I have my old Cosina: the first camera I bought when I was 14 years old. Over the years I have learned everything I know about photography with this camera. It has truly become a trusted and beloved friend.

And then there is Diana F+ that teaches me to celebrate life in all its imperfections. It encourages me to open up to surprises as well accepting possible failures. It teaches me the valuable lesson of letting go of control and being a little more spontaneous. This is a real challenge for a control freak like me. But slowly, if surely, I have grown fond of this camera too. It is my playful, if unpredictable, companion.

And then there is of course Lubitel. It allows a little more control in terms of exposure and focusing. Yet it is light weight enough to take on for long walks, and it allows experimentation with double exposures or using filters. And if I want straightforward, crisp and reliable results, this is my friend for the occasion.

These are my favourite cameras that I celebrate and explore photography with. It is thanks to all that I’ve learned with them that I now see so much more in the world around me!
