The Face in The Rock

A photograph from a current project: doing the photographs for my wife's next music record. We came into possession of a haunted guitar. My wife began painting it to change its energy. Weeks went by, and the question of the art for her record came up. Instead of a portrait of her, I wanted to place the guitar inside a cliff near where we've been living this winter. An artifact to take, and to leave. A hike, then. When we saw the spot we marked an "X" in the sand. The day I returned with the camera and the guitar there were heavy wind gusts, and a dust storm had made an eerie haze as the sun fell. Things were looking good. I found the "X", made a small ladder of rocks to help me, climbed up, placed the instrument in the space, moved the rock ladder, rock by rock, rebuilt it, stood on it, and took a picture. As I watched it develop - to my amazement - I saw a face appear in profile in the crevasse of the rock itself. It was her face, not wanting to be left out. I re-centered the image, took the picture, the wind screaming through the arroyo. I knew it was the right one.
