Lomo LC-A Moments (Part 2)

9

The LC-A is more than just an inanimate, recording device. Over the years, it evolved into a quiet witness to touching moments. A constant companion on life-changing events. A trusty keeper of once-in-a-lifetime memories. For its 32nd birthday, lomographers from across the globe narrate how this analog wonder became a part of their own history.

I had quite many memorable experiences with this camera. Too many things to remember but the most wonderful for me is that I could be friends with people from all over the world. For me, LC-A is kind of an official language which I can speak fluently with anybody who loves it.

For me, the LC-A is a very special and magical camera. I couldn’t get used to it at first but now I’m mad about my LC-A. The coolest moments for me are shooting with slide films and the LomoChrome Purple, discovering multiple exposure (I got an old Soviet camera so I have some difficulties with this function) and, of course, having the opportunity to take it with me wherever I go. Shooting with it led to new discoveries. To be honest, I can’t imagine creating without this amazing camera.

My first encounter with Lomography all began with the LC-A. It took me some years to fully understand it---the distances that I had to remember, and the virtues and problems that came with it. But on one fine day, I started to experience the moment with the LC-A and LC-A+ rather than just shoot them. Once I found the right directions in this maze, a whole new world opened up, which eventually led me to the LC-Wide and LC-A 120. I think it's easier to be a good photographer than to be a good lomographer. I value the latter higher because you really place yourself into the picture and put life to it.

I bought my first LC-A around 1998 so I have many great memories to share: a beautiful holiday with my girlfriend when we cruised on my Citroen 2CV around Corsica, France or when I took photos during the wedding of my best friends.

But I’d like to share a memory that I did not dare to take a picture of. I was on holidays in Normandy, France with my girlfriend and my 3-month-old son. We drove along the coast on camper and my son was sleeping when we reached Omaha Beach. I parked the camper near the beach and I told my girlfriend that I'll quickly go down to the beach to look at the view and take a photograph of it.

At the same time, a bus carrying US WWII veterans stopped by. They walked down to the beach where they have fought 60 years ago during the war. I slipped into their group because I wanted to take some shots with my LC-A. I was about only two meters away from three veterans who were hugging each other. A great photo opportunity I thought until I listened to what they were talking.

One of them shared his memory from D-Day and he said something I will never forget: "The front of the landing craft went down and I knew I will die. I thought if I move I'll get shot. But I knew that if I don't move, I'll get crushed. I didn’t know what to do so I moved." He survived and he was standing on the same beach 60 years later. He was crying and so did the other two veterans who were holding each other's hands. I got teary-eyed and kept my camera down.

Until today, I am convinced they would have been happy if I talked to them and asked permission to take their picture, but I was so touched that I did not even think about it. When I came back to the camper my girlfriend asked me what I did there for almost an hour. I explained what happened and we both got really sad.

I went on a rendezvous with my girlfriend (She loves lomography, too!) and I wanted to surprise her so I bought the Lomo LC-A with me. When we tried shooting with the LC-A, it didn't work. We didn't know that the lens cover must be fully open. We only realized that a few days later. That was our first date with the camera!

The LC-A is special to me as it was one of the very first cameras I ever owned. I experiment with it often and I pretty much take it everywhere I go so there is an abundance of memorable experiences. If I had to name a significant moment with this camera, it would have to be my very first film swap with the lovely @ediblestrange. The project was intimidating, as with all firsts, but also very exciting and a great deal of fun for us both. In the process, I got to know her a whole lot better and I became much more aware of how to use my LC-A effectively, too. It was because of this that I decided to get involved in many more projects within the Lomography community. This helped me meet talented and funny people whom I became great friends with.

LC-A is the icon of Lomography. It's a camera that you can rely on any time, any weather. Using any film or capturing different moods. It's unpretentious and gives clear results. It's a good friend during travels. Love it and it will love you in return.

This camera is really reliable. I have won several competitions, Home the Day, and Photo of the Day with my LC-A+ RL. I think those are my memorable experiences with this camera.

When shooting with the LC-A, make sure to follow Golden Rule #1 (Take your camera everywhere you go), because land or sea the LC-A can go along with you. Split your reality, use a flash to snap a quick candid, and even dive underwater with the LC-A in its Krab housing.

In a recent Lomo walk in Porto, @lovesickewerton borrowed my LC-A because he had only used toy cameras so far and wanted to try an auto-exposure one. During our walk, we went to a subway station. As I was giving some tips, he jumped from the platform to the train tracks to get a better perspective of the tunnel! It's not something you usually see over here and it might even be forbidden!

I love my Lomo LC -A because it is indestructible and has so far never disappointed me. Even after a fall, which tear off its tape, it still worked flawlessly. The camera had changed slightly but I love it even more. It's an indestructible Russian technology that will last for eternity! So this camera is always in my pocket .

It is said that things that seems not important to us is forgotten somewhere in the depths of our memory. This one, though, remains fresh on my mind. My first camera is the LC-A+. In the beginning, we must learn the alphabet and how to write them. I didn't even know how to load the film. So, I went to a photography shop and asked the employee if he could do it for me. He smiled and did it gently and rapidly. Several days later, I brought him the film, an exposed Fuji Superia 200, to be processed and printed. When I came back to get the prints and film, he told me that when he saw the camera and manipulated it, he thought: "One more piece of trash!" But when he saw the prints he was surprised by the "definition of the images." For sure he was restoring, in his psyche, the equilibrium between the fragile appearance of the camera and the excellent images it can create. It was an extremely simple event but the truth is that I have never forgotten it.

Every moment with my LC-A is memorable. Since the day I got it on the fall of 2010, it never left my side and has been my constant companion on many adventures! However, there's one memory that always stands out: my day trip to Grinzing, Austria. I was in Vienna and decided to take a tram to this wine town with my LC-A and some Fuji Sensia films. The results of this solo LomoWalk I did have been always been my favorite shots! I had so much fun that day that I took my husband there during our recent trip to Vienna so we could relive these memories that I had.

@andrejrusskovskij Thanks. It's maybe hard to understand but this is one of these memories I will carry with me my entire life. Visiting a military cemetery in Normandy is sad and somehow impressive but really nothing compared to such an experience. Maybe the first minutes of Saving Private Ryan give an impression of how it was. But then again it is only a movie and fear and emotions is what I learned that day on the beach.
