LomoGuru of the Week: kleinerkaries

10

Her LomoHome name, kleinerkaries, is a combination of two German words that mean “little” and “caries.” Well, sounds a bit peculiar but this has nothing to do with the state of her teeth! Read on to find out how our LomoGuru of the Week got this interesting moniker!

Tell us something about yourself.

For a living, I basically think, talk, laugh, listen, read, check, roll my eyes, shake my head, act as a trainer, tamer, detective, psychologist, guard, caretaker, secretary, interpreter, tour guide, postman, locksmith, coffeemaker, scapegoat, and producer of used paper. I try to balance that with going on mini-breaks as often as I can and spend most of my summer weekends at music festivals. Besides that, I like a good meal and gripping TV shows. I’m still waiting for that madman in a blue box to pick me up.

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name.

I got the nickname “Karies" (German for caries) at the Bizarre Festival in 2000. We wanted to play Murder In the Dark with our new neighbors at the campsite. We wanted to take advantage of that fact that it was already dark so we set up a contract on a fabric shopping bag in which we laid out the rules, place, time, and the participants.

Since we had only just met, we didn’t know each other’s names. When I was asked for my name, I was brushing my teeth, so I had problems speaking. My new friend didn’t understand a word and said, “Whatever, I’ll simply put in caries.” Since then, my closest friends call me Karies. It has got nothing to do with the state of my teeth. They truly are perfect!

“kleiner” is German for “little” which refers to my height.

Share with us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community

My most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community is being among the Top 10 of the Menschen und Berufe deiner Stadt – der deutschlandweite Lomography X Das Telefonbuch Wettbewerb. For this, I was invited to the opening of a huge Lomo-Map of Germany in Cologne, which featured some of my photos.

This was already a year ago but I think there will be more unforgettable moments ahead. For instance, this summer I will take part in the LomoWeekend organized by frauspatzi, faaabii, thegrump, trash-gordon-from-outer-space and stellastellar. I will spend a whole weekend with fellow Lomographers, exchange experiences, receive helpful advice, get new creative ideas, take part in workshops, and shoot lots of photos. Maybe, I’ll even make some new friends.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

If we don’t run out of good slide films and labs which are willing to cross process them at a reasonable price, then I think I’ll do. I love the suspense I feel from choosing the film and camera to waiting for the film to be delivered. Then, the process of scanning it to finally see the results.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences using this camera?

My favourite Lomo camera is the LC-A. It might be for the same reason you always hear when somebody raves about it. It is small, handy, and easy to use. I love the vignettes it creates. I usually get great results from it especially when the films are cross processed. You can also easily attract passers-by. Sometimes they even say, “Wow, look at her! She is still doing that thing with her thumb to advance a film!”

Please share with us your favorite Lomographic shot and explain why you love that particular image.

Let’s call it one of my favourite Lomographic shots.

I had only been into Lomography for a month and done my first attempts with a Diana Mini and some expired color negative film I found in my stash.

Then, I decided to get a second hand LC-A. To test it, I loaded a roll of Fuji Velvia 50, a film which I had also never used before. On top of that, I decided to cross process it. At that moment, I only had a slight idea about cross processing but I thought: nothing ventured, nothing gained. In the end, I was thrilled with the results. I loved the whole album that came out of it.

In this photo, I especially love the combination of the sun peaking through and the ice cold snow.

Please share a Lomograph you wish you had taken and explain why.

It is this grinning goat by kleeblatt. Why? Because it is a GOAT GRINNING! Let’s talk about decisive moments.

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

“You can still buy film.”

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, which one is it and why?

One of my favorite books became a film so it would be Herr Lehmann or Berlin Blues. The main character, Frank Lehmann, originally comes from Bremen, where I have been living for a while now, and tries to live an easy life without making too much of a fuss. As always, life has different plans and he constantly ends up in weird situations. Things just happen.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Enjoy!
