Sprocket Rocket goes Infrared

720nm filter, two stops push processing, but still not enough exposure.....maybe three stops push should be enough?

Wow, great results! Not an easy camera to get enough exposure with for infrared.

Great album!! You took a film that's not so easy to work with and turned it into a beautiful album!!

You make me want to try infrared films. But you have to process them yourself, right?

Wonderful, dramatic photos, great album. The R09 filter looks like dark red. For greatest IR effect, use something like a Wratten #87 (not 87C) or Hoya R72 (not RG830). Rollei IR is ISO 400 as B&W, so for filter factor 6 or so, shoot ISO 12, plus 1 or more f/stop exposure for reciprocity failure. Bracket a bit. The Rollei IR's sensitivity fades at about 800nm, so #87C and RG830 are too dense. Look here: www.lomography.com/homes/herbert-4/blog/2844-efke-ir820-fil… Using that Sprocket Rocket, braced on something flat or tripod, shoot B for maybe 1/2sec or 1sec through #87 or R72 filter in bright sunlight. I'm guessing there will be reciprocity failure, so exposure should be OK. Experiment. Enjoy.

Thanks for your support! Much appreciated!
@clickiemcpete @atria007 Thank you too! I think it needs more exposure too, but there is no way to get that if I don't modify the camera....Or if I learn how to do more extreme push on that film. This is <supposed> to be a 1600 ISO push.
@kibs Thank you too. That film is not really that difficult to use. I got recognizable images where I really shouldn't :-D
@davidb Thanks! Go on and try it, make sure you have a proper filter to go with it. No idea how/who can develop that film, it's really a B&W emulsion, that is developed like a normal B&W film. Guys who develop it must make sure that it doesn't get in touch with IR counters/lights in their equipment.
@herbert-4 That's really a 720nm filter. The r09 tag that you're seeing is the developer (a.k.a Rodinal or R09). It's a no name filter, and I guess it corresponds to the mentioned Hoya R72. Just to give you an idea what it looks like - a very very deep red one. CCFL bulbs look almost black through it, but incandescent ones and sun-lit scenes shine through with a red colour.
I did actually try hand-held Bulb, but very brief one, maybe 1/4 or 1/8 and I got a very over exposed frames:

I would dare to use the camera on a tripod and shoot bulb as brief as I can. But I don't have 35mm Rollei 400s. Only 80S

@gauthierdumonde I don't feel like lugging a tripod in a bright sunny day. I prefer to have enough exposure for hand-held. Is it a too wild of a dream to have the Smena shutter (1/8-1/300+B) adapted to this camera?

I didn't know you were trying to push the film... Pushing the film with IR is unpredictable, and the faster you go, the greater the reciprocity failure. You might not really gain much speed. Try it with your Pentax, it might even have an IR focus mark, and don't push, especially with fast film. The Pentax will have fast (maybe f/1.8) lens to hand hold. Focus, then put on filter. I thought the r09 tag was a filter, and was thinking like Wratten # r90, a darkish reddish brown. It was a Kodak thing for B&W movie lighting effect, but I don't know for what. Anyway, enjoy!!

BTW... a 720nm filter will be almost black in sunlight, the sun showing JUST a red disc. A 830nm filter will be just BLACK, even in sun, quite beyond most peoples visual spectrum.

@herbert-4 Thanks for the tips. Pentax MZ-30 works well in IR:
    www.lomography.com/homes/adash/popular/photos/16891500
    www.lomography.com/homes/adash/popular/photos/17239468
but the constant "put on" and "take off" the filter is a pain in the ass.
I believe that there is no reciprocity failure now, since these are shot at the "Normal" speed of the Sprocket Rocket, which is probably 1/100. Contrast is however too high, due to the push processing, and shadow detail is practically missing.

Can you get a 40.5mm R72? Or a reducing ring? Put IR filter on your FED 3 and shoot IR, focusing without removing filter. IR focus is 1st depth of field mark. Enjoy!

@herbert-4 I have that, but I am not impressed by FED's "normal" lens - I want it wider. Today I was able to make an ultra-wide angle viewfinder from a Fisheye Nr.2 VF and PVC tape, and I used the Pentax with the zoom lens locked at approximately 20mm. I have not developed that yet however, but at least something should be present....
