Monument to Leo Tolstoy on Cook Street in Moscow

A monument to Leo Tolstoy is set in 1956 in front of the old mansion on Povarskaya street 52 (At the Soviet Union — Vorovskogo Street). This house has become history of the Russian literature as a mansion of a families Growth, described by Lev Tolstoy in the novel "War and peace". Actually, this classical mansion, built in the XVIII century, was owned by the princes Dolgorukov. Later the house was associated with several known in the literary world names. Thus, in the second half of the XIX century in the house Church when the mansion was crowned poet Ivan Aksakov with Anna Tyutcheva, the daughter of Fyodor Tyutchev. Stayed here passing through Alexander Griboyedov's widow Nina Chavchavadze, and the owner of the estate was briefly Fedor Sologub.
After the October revolution, in 1921, here at the initiative of the poet V. Brusov was opened Higher literary-art Institute, and later housed the Board of the USSR Union of writers, headed by Maxim Gorky.

    Памятник Льву Толстому установлен в 1956 году перед старинным особняком на улице Поварской 52 (При советском союзе — улица Воровского). Этот дом вошел в историю русской литературы как особняк семьи Ростовых, описанный Львом Толстым в романе «Война и мир». На самом деле, этим классическим особняком, построенным в XVIII веке, владели князья Долгоруковы. Позже особняк оказался связан еще с несколькими известными в литературном мире фамилиями. Так, во второй половине XIX века в домовой церкви при особняке венчался поэт Иван Аксаков с Анной Тютчевой, дочерью Федора Тютчева. Здесь останавливалась проездом вдова Александра Грибоедова Нина Чавчавадзе, а хозяином усадьбы недолгое время был Федор Сологуб.

    После Октябрьской революции, в 1921 году, здесь по инициативе поэта В. Я. Брюсова был открыт Высший литературно-художественный институт, а позднее разместилось правление Союза писателей СССР, который возглавлял Максим Горький.
