Maya Beano Shoots with the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens in Arctic Norway

1

Cambridge based photographer, Maya Beano has a wonderful eye for soft, yet dramatic lighting. We recently lent her our dreamy Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens and she produced some truly stunning scenes in chilly Norway.

Hello Maya, tell us a bit about yourself?

Hello, I’m a scientist and photographer based in Cambridge, UK. I shoot on 35mm film (99% of the time!)

How did you get on shooting with the Daguerreotype Achromat lens?

The Daguerreotype Achromat lens is a very beautiful piece of kit. I used the brass version on my Canon EOS 3 film camera. It feels heavy, but a good kind of heavy. I was intrigued by the aperture plates that come with it, and had a lot of fun changing them around. The photos taken without an aperture plate slotted in came out very blurry, as expected, but once you slot in the right plate, you can achieve just enough focus to give dreamy, ethereal results.

What did you choose to shoot?

I took this lens to Arctic Norway with me. It’s very sleepy up there, and I wanted to capture that peacefulness. This lens works best for photos where there’s a big distance between the background and the subject in the foreground, although I used it for a variety of situations.

Did the lens change the way you take photos?

Shooting with this lens made me mindful of focusing the scene properly. It wasn’t easy, but it was well worth the effort.

What's coming up for you in 2018?

I’m currently working on a new set of limited edition prints that I’ll be offering in a range of sizes. For the first time, I have very high quality scans of my film photos, and I’m excited to see what they’ll look like when they're enlarged into huge sizes, say size A0 or similar. Other than that, I hope I’ll be exploring some new landscapes, as always.
