Around the World in Analogue: A Neighborhood in São Paulo

The Brazilian capital that is São Paulo is famously known for its lively urban culture, the streets with its usual hustle-and-bustle, not to mention the diversity of the city proper from tall, intimidating buildings to colorful and artful works of architecture. But as the pandemic continues to threaten the city, Lomographer Cris Miranda a.k.a. crismiranda notices the changes and documents the current reality that's dichotomous to the metropolis she once knew.

This is the result of a morning walk in which I decided to create a series that could show some of my neighborhood’s iconic spots. It was a luminous Sunday and it almost felt like I was in a ghost town: too many closed and abandoned places. I walked for hours and I saw nothing but a couple of people. 

Although it might look like a small town in my photographs, São Paulo is a megalopolis: according to World Population Review, Sao Paulo's 2021 population is now estimated at 22,237,472 inhabitants. However, all the businesses and people that in the recent past used to crowd the streets are no longer seen.

For this series, I chose Lomography Metropolis under the influence of lots of urban shots I’ve been studying and some articles I read about the film. I had to load it on my Canon EOS Rebel 2000 (due to the quarantine my other gear is at the technician’s since last February).  

I set the ISO at 200 and there go the results. The color shift is not as noticeable, but the tones of the photographs enhanced the melancholic atmosphere of that day, even where the overexposed highlights are seen.
