Tennessee River Bridges

This photo is taken from the old bridge across the Tennessee River between Sheffield and Florence, Alabama. The bridge was built before the U.S. Civil War by the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, which later became part of the Southern Railway. After the Louisville and Nashville railroad came to Florence it also used the bridge. The bridge has two levels. The top level is for the railroad and the bottom level is a road. When the railroads stopped using this bridge the span over the barge channel was removed, so it no longer connects to Florence, AL. The bottom level is open as a pedestrian walkway. The bridge seen at the left of the photo is the O'Neal Bridge, a newer highway bridge over the Tennessee River.
