Very expressive statue - perhaps the man looks at the lamp judging how long it will last, say, after being blocked by tunnel collapse - or judges if the flame has changed indicating presence of some nasty "damp"... They also say it is the highest point of the Nottinghamshire. UK probably has the longest story of industrial coal mining - and longest list of well-documented accidents and disasters related - dedicated "category" in wikipedia could be read as chapters of some historical / horror / detective novel...

@rodiongork Thank you very much! It is indeed the highest point in Nottinghamshire but some people dispute this because it is on a humanly created hill of spoil from the colliery rather than natural. Thank you for your insights and yes, terrible history of accidents, exploitation and other horrors. Only a few of the early colliery owners were caring and considered the welfare of their workers, there are a couple of them locally including one company that invented a sprung stretcher on rails to evacuate injured miners and developed a first aid corps. The exception. The memorial statue sometimes has flowers laid at its base like the blurry ones in the photo, there are still people remembering loved ones long after the pits have gone. Thanks again!
